Zadar is a city in Croatia, bordering the Adriatic Sea. Zadar is the county seat and the entire region of northern Dalmatia. Is a neighbor islands Zadar Ugljan and Pasman, which is separated from the narrow Zadar Strait. The promontory on which it was built the old city was separated from the mainland by a deep moat, which today has become a waste landfill.
Orasulului Zadar area was inhabited since prehistoric times. The oldest evidence of human life comes from the Stone Age, while many villages have been dating since the Neolithic.
The inhabitants of Zadar, called iadasinoi, were mentioned for the first time in 384 BC as allies of indigenous Hvar and as leaders of a coalition of Eastern Adriatic Greek colonists fight. Zadar was historically under Romanian domination, Ostrogoths, Byzantine, Venetian, Austro-Hungarian, Italian, and in 1991 was annexed to the new Republic of Croatia.
Zadar site was originally organized during the reign of emperor Augustus and Julius Caesar, in accordance with the typical Roman: rectangular street plan, forum, baths, sewage system and water supply.
But urban appearance was completely won during the Middle Ages, a matter which has been preserved almost in its entirety today. In the sixteenth century, the Venetians fortified the city and continued construction renaissance.
In 1873 under Austrian domination Zadar city ramparts have been converted, the fortifications, the promenade extending from the sea and skyline vistas from land lines but the wall is preserved.
During the bombing during the Second World War, the damage was significant, but some structures have survived: the Roman Forum - the largest in the eastern Adriatic, founded the first Roman emperor Augustus, as shown in the Two stone inscriptions dating from the 3rd century, St. Donatus - a monumental round building, pre-Romanesque style, traditional, dating from the ninth century the remains of the Roman Aqueduct, which had a 40 km length represented the city water supply of Varna Lake, etc..
In recent years, Zadar was reborn in an amazing way. Countless cafes and bars were open and the museums and churches have been restored. Zadar is the starting point for boats to the islands of Pag, Dugi Otok, for the upcoming Biograd or even a day trip to Plitvice
