The third city in size scale Croatia after Zagreb and Split, and the country's first-port of Rijeka. Of the nearly 150,000 inhabitants, over 80% of the Croatian nation, although a good part of the recent history of Italian and Hungarian influences were more significant. The position occupied in the Kvarner Bay, Adriatic Sea, the resort so the success of the present and enjoyed for centuries in the past.
Rijeka (Fiume in Italian and Hungarian, in Croatian dialects: Rika and Reka, Slovene: Reka, German: Sankt Veit am Flaum or Pflaume-both historic) is the principal seaport of Croatia, located on Kvarner Golgi. Rijeka is the center of the province of Primorje-Gorski Kotar in Croatia. S mainly the city's economy focuses on shipbuilding (shipyards "3 Maj" and "Viktor Lenac) and shipping.
Rijeka hosts the Croatian National Theatre "Ivan pl. Zajc, built in 1765, and the University of Rijeka, founded in 1973, but with roots dating back to 1632.
They say that Rijeka was founded around 1400, but archaeological evidence shows a much earlier human presence on these lands. Stage of economic development even started from the sixteenth century due to trade iron, oil, wood, wool and livestock. Rijeka city's economy witnessed a revival in the eighteenth century. At the time of Augustus, the Romans rebuilt the city Tarsatica (MacMullen 2000) on the right bank of the small river Rječina, whose name means "Great River". Since the fifth century, the city was ruled successively by the Ostrogoths, Byzantines, Lombards, Avars, Franks, Croats and Hungarians, before coming under the control of Austria archduchy led by Austrian Habsburgs in 1466, where he remained for over 450 years to occupancy by the Italians and Croats by the end of WWI.
Although there was a church dedicated to the patron saint of the city since the Middle Ages, St. Vitus Cathedral as we know it today was founded in 1638 by Jesuits, who were an influential force under the Habsburgs. The monument is relatively circular shape, quite unusual for this part of Europe, and is embellished with elements belonging to the Baroque and Gothic styles. Among the unusual features which include stained glass gives originality and a crucifix gothic St. Vitus Cathedral.
Rijeka medieval city was surrounded by a wall, being a feudal fortress. The fort was in the center, located on the highest point.
If you are lovers of walking, escape for a few hours at Kastav city, which sits on a hill in north-western city. The perspective offered by this location will certainly cause more lingered, trying as some of the local culinary specialties extremely inviting.
