Lovran (Italian: Laurana) is a town in Istria, Croatia. It is located on the west coast of the Kvarner bay, and has a population of 3241 inhabitants (2001 census). Its name comes from Laurel (Laurus nobilis), as shown in the emblem.
Lovran is one of the oldest settlement on the eastern shore of the Istrian peninsula. By the Middle Ages was an important urban center and a shipbuilding center in the northern Adriatic. Following the sudden development of port cities nearby (Trieste, Pula and Rijeka), which became dominant, as well as new urban centers in the region, Lovran has lost its meaning. However, from mid-19th century, it became a fashionable resort for the Austro-Hungarian nobility. Long tradition of tourism is still strongly felt in the Lovran area and forms the backbone of the economy.
The region is rich in cultural and historical heritage. A parish church with medieval frescoes and Glagolitic inscriptions and 14th-century tower of St.George Square, architectural buildings and surrounding parks, are points of interest.
Among the city's attractions include beautiful villas in the suburbs and the city old XII century church of St. George, Stubai, city gate, and two municipal beaches.
